Beverage
Galore
When it comes to receiving antennas, nothing beats a Beverage antenna.
For many reasons:
You just pull out as much wire as you can, from 100 to 1000 meters,
as straight as you can, and towards the part of the world that you want
to listen to.
Plug it into your receiver, start listening. It can be that easy.
And then... there is always those what if's, most of which is answered
by W8JI.
Not least, don't forget the three noble truths from my own personal
antenna guru, Thomas

Starting DXing
again, I need an online service to keep up with things. So this is a site
for my own pleasure, updated with what I want, when needed.
As I don't like Facebook, Instagram,
Blogger, Wordpress or other so-called free social media plattform (all they
want is to make money on our data), I do this on my own site.
So no need to worry about cookies, ads,
fancy hidden gizmos; this is just plain HTML, the way it all once started.

Straight?
Not necessarily...
In theory, your Beverage
antenna should be straight and at the same height.
That's theory.
In real life, antenna wires doesn't care that much about theory.They just
want to work.
For months I did a test with two antennas in the same direction, separated
by some meters.
One straight as an arrow (well, almost), 400 meters.

The other zigzagging along a barbed wire fence.

The best Beverage of these two, in the long run, turned out to be this
zigzagg'er -- which in theory should be the worst.

of good advice, and lots of bad. Here are some of the better ones.

Tom Rauch's rules for receiving antennas:
Lay feed
lines directly on earth or bury feed lines in the soil so earth losses
reduce shield current and limit feed line common
mode impedance.
If noise
levels
are high or antenna sensitivity is very low, isolate the feed line from
the antenna as it approaches the antenna by using choke baluns
Ground
the feed line a few dozen feet away from the antenna
Avoid
autotransformers. Instead use isolated primary and secondary
isolated winding transformers
Use
an independent ground on the antenna. Never connect an antenna
signal ground to the coaxial cable shield!
Terminated
loops (K9AY, Flag, Pennant, Ewe) -- Great care must be taken
in decoupling the feed line from the antenna.
The
wonderful Beverage -- there isn't any other receiving antenna
that is as simple, as easy to construct and maintain, and as foolproof
as a Beverage
Noise, noise, noise
Serious ferrite core for RFI problems
-- "an HF ferrite choke will typically need 6-8 turns passing through
the centre hole. Regardless of the type of core, one pass through the
centre will never be effective at HF!"*
